NYFW18: Perry Ellis

CREATIVE director Michael Maccari stuck to a smart/casual dress code for the Perry Ellis men’s fall 2018 collection. Once a circus, the Hippodrome Building in New York City was  the backdrop for the show, where the models sported both workwear and athleisure. The dress trousers which juxtaposed with sneakers, rendered these men both gym and office ready. We may have been unsure of their plans for the day, but we know they were prepared either way.

Maccari prioritised warmth, layering them up with polo necks, striped shirts and suit blazers over tracksuit jackets – zipped right up. Pieces to point out were the bum bags in nylon (which we saw a surge of over 2017), the chunky woollen snoods, and an oversized puffer in steel blue. The dash of mustard yellow from beanie hats and a sportswear jacket ensured an element of play was incorporated to the more uniform colours of grey marl, navy blue and burgundy. Footwear was casual chic – convenient for getting around the city quick.

The unsureness of where these men are headed, serves as a reminder of the anywhere-dressing motto of the American designer. Prepared for anything – the Perry Ellis customer has the security and confidence to mix styles and dress codes. The collection certainly lived up to its spring campaign of Life Ready Since 1976.
