Tyger tyger, burning bright

The Save Wild Tigers’ Be Inspired art exhibition at The Club at Cafe Royal London features several pieces aiming to frame the tiger’s perfect symmetry. Not least the late Neon Man Chris Bracey and Be Inspired curator Christian Furr’s Tyger Tyger, “a magnificent raging tiger’s head in reflective chrome thrusting forth from an explosion of bright yellow neon stars and a red neon cross – both a symbol of sacrifice and medicine,” says Christian, who in 1995, became the youngest artist to have ever been officially commissioned to paint the Queen. “You can’t ignore neon; it’s a sign, a call to action: save the wild tiger!”

Artwork from Chinese pop artist Jacky Tsai and artist, creative designer Daisuke Sakaguchi, and other internationally renowned artists Piers Bourke, Shauna Richardson, Rose Corcoran, Lauren Baker, John Gledhill and others, sit alongside Chris and Christian’s rock n’ roll contemporary 3D neon piece.

Although rock isn’t on Daisuke’s mind when he looks at Tyger Tyger: “I am a big fan of images and objects that take me back to the Eighties,” says Daisuke, “I get nostalgic when I see this sculpture as it reminds me of early electronic dance music, awesome graphics and street signs from back in the day.”

Daisuke’s own artwork, Inazuma, acrylic and varnish on canvas, is set to be the exhibition’s showstopper and follows in his characteristic modern interpretation of irezumi (traditional Japanese tattoos) and represents “perseverance and determination to have the confidence to show who you are and make your voice heard.”

Each piece is now available online for auction, with proceeds going to provide a better habitat for wild tigers. It’s a worthy and topical cause as there are only 3,200 tigers living in the wild today, where a century ago 100,000 roamed regions in Asia.

“Save Wild Tigers’ Be Inspired is a great cause with a common achievable goal,” says Christian. “For me, it’s a chance to get together some artists I admire to help save the big cat. It is driven by love.”
