LEADING the way in ethical fashion, the Stella McCartney AW18 show in Paris was everything the industry needed and more. The rest of the fashion world is only just catching up to McCartney, who since 2001 has proven that sustainable fashion is not only possible, but the way forward.
The biggest surprise at this year’s show was that for the first time, McCartney combined her womenswear and menswear – which she only launched one year ago – together on the runway. It was a big success all around and the juxtaposition worked wonders, from the femininity and gentile of the lingerie-inspired lace dresses contrasted with the oversized tweed suiting paired with trainers (which used a special type of stitching instead of glue).
The collection was shrouded with lace which draped and layered over prints derived from paintings of 1960s artist J.H. Lynch. There was lots of tulle, and of course the animal-free attire – the faux fur, faux skins and faux leather. The pioneer proves time after time that fashion doesn’t have to be cruel, nor at the expense of the environment.
A further surprise was the recent reports regarding the partnership between Stella McCartney and Kering. Rumour has it, the two are in talks about McCartney buying back the 50 per cent share of her company which is currently owned by Kering, but we are awaiting confirmation of this next month.
