Welcome to the autumn issue of Glass – The Time is Now

THE TIME IS NOW – Issue 51

Turning our back on a period when the concept of time was relatively lost on most of us, the autumn 2022 Glass issue marks a shake-up of sorts, a reshuffling of the Glass cards to serve an innovative hand, one which, above all else, champions a new outlook. The Glass mentality has transformed, immediately evident in the fact that Imogen Clark and I will now be taking joint lead in the Editor’s Note. As much as this new era will stay true to the codes of Glass, it will also encourage a breathing space to explore innovative designers, creators and talents like never before. I hope you enjoy exploring my thoughts too.

Emulating the magnitude of our 50th issue celebration, the 51st issue exists as a symbol of our first steps to our hundredth. In the following pages, Fashion Director Katie Felstead showcases the AW22 collections on a palette of new faces, each intuitively elevating the outfits with their individuality; the latest intricacies of jewellery innovation are captured through the eyes of photographers Zeb Daemen and Louis Samuelsen; and Beauty Director Kim Brown presents a symphony of hues on a harmony of women in our beauty section. As usual, I delve deeper into the inclinations of AW22, selecting a sparkling concoction of new jewellery releases and, at one point, exploring the recent phenomenon of Little Miss under a luxury fashion lens.

Opening the issue are two women who define what it is to be a talent, with model Deva Cassel already celebrated despite only recently graduating from high school, and actor Charlbi Dean starring in the upcoming Palme d’Or winning, Triangle of Sadness, winning the hearts of the entire Glass team during the shoot for this issue. It was a huge shock to us all when just days later Charlbi passed away. This issue is in dedication to all that she achieved, and all that she will undoubtedly inspire after the release of the film. We hope to cement her legacy in the pages that follow.

The time is now.

It seems apt to centre this issue around a new vision. It marks a new chapter in the publication’s history, with Lily Rimmer and I taking over the reins for the 51st issue building the opening line. As we looked to the future in preparation, and reflected on the ways in which we were championed by those who have previously stood in our position, we knew we wanted to emulate them.

While this issue seeks to champion what and who’s next – such as our cover star Deva Cassel, the 18-year-old model that is already showing glimmers of becoming one of fashion’s favourite it-girls, and Chinese-Canadian artist Sougwen Chung who we speak to in our feature on AI  – it is ultimately dedicated to our cover star, the late South African actor Charlbi Dean.

In August, I had the pleasure of speaking to Charlbi about her breakout role in the upcoming Ruben Östlund’s film Triangle of Sadness. Beaming from ear-to-ear upon hearing my praise of her performance, she delved into her difficult journey to landing this coveted role and spoke of her excitement for her future. The news of her passing devastated me and the Glass team. I speak for us all when I say that she was one of those rare individuals whose grace, humility and ambition influenced all those who were fortunate enough to meet her.

In the process of building this issue for our readers, I learnt that looking forward is just as crucial as reflecting on the past. That way you can learn to hold onto what’s important as you go into the future.
