Taste the glamour at Mayfair’s The Japanese

ONE OF London’s most renowned member’s clubs, Annabel’s, opens their sixth restaurant – The Japanese. This new addition to their already impressive offering promises to welcome its guests to experience some Asian-inspired fine-dining in the heart of Mayfair.

The Japanese interior

Annabel’s provides their guests with an immediate feeling of fantasy and glamour from the moment of entering the building. The first floor of the club has been redesigned to reflect the atmosphere of contemporary Japanese dining with traditional prints visible on antique rugs, whilst the Murano glass chandeliers fill the space with delicate yet vibrant lighting. The intimate atmosphere is heightened by the heavy ceiling to floor velvet curtains and hand-embroidered cushions.

Black Cod with sayiko miso

The menu is kept simple but that doesn’t mean it lacks in flavours as the restaurant showcases some of the most famous national dishes with guests being able to try Grilled Wagyu Sirloin with fresh wasabi, Aubergine with kinome miso and tomatoes, or a perfectly delicate Tuna Tataki.

The one that impressed me the most was, of course, the black cod glazed with sayiko miso that was served with a side of grilled broccoli – a treat for anyone, and will be sure to give those that believe they have the best black cod in town a run for their money.

We couldn’t leave without trying something from the sushi section. After a long internal debate, I finally set on what was recommended to us by our waitress – spicy yellowtails maki rolls – which was a great way to finish the delightful selection of plates.

Tuna Tataki

The Japanese influence is also visible in the drinks menu where the guests will be able to find the world’s best sakes and sochu. For those who don’t opt for this type of alcohol very frequently and feel overwhelmed by the vast selection, the sommelier will be able to recommend which ones to try first.

Also available is a selection of champagnes by the glass and a range of Japanese whiskies including a very limited and exclusive bottle of Yamazaki 55.

Zen Martini

Those who prefer to choose a cocktail as their go to will not be disappointed. The menu has been based on ‘The Book of Five Rings’ by Miyamoto Musashi and features a wide selection of interesting combinations; such as Flames of Tokyo made with Suntory Toki Whisky, flame shrub and nori leaf oils, but also a spin on some classics, such as the Espresso Martini, here renamed as the Zen Martini as it looses the caffeine kick and swaps it with home-made Matcha powder and gin.

Amazing flavours, a dreamy atmosphere and astonishing décor makes the visit to the Annabel’s worthy of every penny.
