Soho’s Boulevard Theatre debuts Cormac McCarthy play – The Sunset Limited

THE Sunset Limited, running at the Boulevard Theatre in Soho from this week until the end of February, marks the first Cormac McCarthy play to be performed on the London stage. Dealing with the big issues – redemption, faith and freewill – the renowned Pulitzer Prize-winning American writer, now 86, is at his best.

Revolving around two nameless characters, symbolically designated “Black” and “White”, the gripping drama begins with Black saving White from throwing himself in front of a train. The narrative ensues from this impromptu moment of having being united on a platform, and their dialogue soon enough turns to the most essential and existential questions facing humanity. Presenting a clash of viewpoints, the resolution each character seeks could mean the difference between life and death.

Directed by Olivier and Tony Award-winner Terry Johnson, and with lead performances by Gary Beadle and Jasper Britton, the production will no doubt be memorable. The Boulevard, tucked away in Walker’s Court, continues to be a stalwart and innovative performance venue in the West End, with a strong programme led by artistic director Rachel Edwards. What’s more, the theatre houses a fabulous pink-hued restaurant and bar. Perfect for your next thespian night out.
