PFW SS19: Miu Miu

MIU Miu shows always feel more like lessons. Very educational and productive lessons, to be frank, for Miuccia Prada continually maps schoolgirl styles onto assured womenswear. Following on from last week’s Prada show in Milan (a informed teaching of how to suggest some serious babydoll vibes), the Italian designer unveiled Miu Miu’s SS19 collection this afternoon in Paris. Serving up to be one of the final shows of PFW, Prada put her pretty step forward to finalise fashion’s voice for the upcoming season. And her class on femininity was a well-received finish.

Feminine attire was immediately to be sourced with ease, for Miu Miu models were topped with overtly girlish decoration. Pussy bows, rosettes, sequins, ribbon headbands, sashes, you name it. The immediate message was clear: these women were parading through Paris with a friendly desire to educate and have fun. The collection began with a uniform statement: an oversized, box structured black blazer, finished with overgrown rose decoration. Styled with a bright pink silk shirt (smart and sophisticated alike), knee-high socks and platform heels, stylish school-wear was blossoming for SS19. And Miuccia was in the process of gaining a top teacher score.

Speaking of teaching, the collection also mastered the art of bedazzlement. Quirky two-piece ensembles soon stood up in Miuccia’s classroom, from purple shorted suit-wear to polo shirts and sparkling pencil skirts. Make way for the millennials! But one important note to take down: Miu Miu’s schoolgirls didn’t solely stick to satin and sequins. Distressed denim took to the front of class too, structured into asymmetric skirts, shirts, slip dresses and even heels. To accessorise, countless crystals were spotted across long, eccentric necklaces, contemporary cuffed earrings and fine, tiara-style headbands.

Foreground by a playful backdrop of giant MIU letters, the house was smiling with total teenage spirit. Classroom clothing aside though, it was becoming apparent that the end of Paris Fashion Week, and the end of Fashion Month, was very much looming. So as we prepare to bid farewell to our accustomed days of shows and SS19 spotting, it’s time to take note of the final sartorial tips. As far as Prada’s sister brand is concerned, life’s lesson is one of luxury. So we’ll be stepping into next season with cool schoolgirl style, and a mature, Miuccia sensibility. Lesson learned!
