PFW SS19: Aalto

THE SS19 RTW Aalto collection fits perfectly into Paris Fashion Week. The collection encapsulates Parisian ideals of sophistication and elegance, but adds a little bit of the unexpected. Founder Tuomas Merikoski incorporates the unexpected throughout the collection, playing with checked prints and bold colours against neutral tones. Experimenting with the ideas of trends, he brings together Parisian chic with Western style, combining broad shouldered silhouettes and flat-brimmed hats, and playing with fabric choices like black leather with tan suede.

The collection was designed with the working woman in mind. From beige power-suits to see-through mesh blouses, Merikoski demonstrates that a powerful woman can wear diverse styles. Set against the background of an open street, with zebra crossings and all, it’s clear he wants the collection to epitomise street style as well. Blending together minimalism with the outrageous, feminine and masculine, bold and neutral, Aalto crosses the boundaries of what is expected of womenswear.

As the Finnish word Aalto translates as “wave”, Founder Touomas Merikoski experimented with elements of the collection, especially seams and necklines, waving the fabric. Ultimately, the idea of progression and change associated with the word wave drives the entire collection, experimenting with what we think of streetstyle and workwear.
