ENTITLED As the Way It Comes to Be, Issey Miyake’s AW21 collection celebrates nature and all its glorious colours and shapes. Separated into seven categories to highlight nature’s facets, the collection predominantly focuses on textiles as each garment is formed from a piece of rectangular cloth.

Creative director Mikiya Takimoto presents the show digitally, both in spaces of nature and amongst structured buildings. The ethereal, simplistic instrumental takes a secondary stance, allowing the pieces to make the noise.
Like the start of a new day, the collection begins with the series Rise. Using a cotton-polyester fabric, with elastic yarn woven through the centre, the clothes create an oversized and organic silhouette.

Cliff series follows, with pieces produced from two types of yarn, presenting a design of interchanging textures. One yarn causes pleating and large ripple-like waves, whilst the non-pleating yarn cushions the look with its soft feel.

The pieces in the Stone series are of course inspired by stones. Handcrafted using the traditional technique of suminagashi, where dyes are added to water and soaked up by a fabric, the finished items are highly unique and effective.

The combined Raw Wool/Raw Colour series features natural colours and environmentally friendly wool, displaying unique folding sleeves as well as suit and jumpsuit styles.

Hogushigasuri, a traditional dyeing technique, is used on the pieces in the Silk Shade series to reflect flowers gleaming in the moonlight. The fabrics versatility shines through its ability to fold into rectangular shapes while also providing a 3D-illusion when worn.

Standing in an open plain, three models exhibit the Monochrome Planet series with two dress designs and a top and trousers set. Embodying circular shapes with concentric pleats for further emphasis, the pieces are bold, free-flowing and enchanting.

Completing the collection on a sophisticated note is the Fine Shirt series. Offering short, regular and long lengths, the shirt’s fabric is lightweight and promises a sleek finish.

Miyake’s expansive and carefully curated designs for his AW21 collection are not only truly impressive, but they remind us to appreciate the beauty and tranquillity of nature.
