NYFW18: Marc Jacobs

A CARNIVAL of masculine cuts, a neo-noir palette and ‘80s tailoring were all seen for Marc Jacobs AW18. The dimly-lit runway, soon brightened with kaleidoscopic colours, was a grand finale to New York Fashion Week with a collection of theatrical garments fit for Broadway. Oversized, Blade Runner-esque attire that accentuated the shoulders was worn by models donning wide brim hats or sharp, jewel-coloured hairstyles.

Marc Jacobs played with gender fluidity by reverting back to ‘80s androgynous stylising. The women sported dual-tone brogues, boxy trousers and blazers which came in dyed leathers and cabaret patterns. Incorporated into the vibe came office-wear inspirations of subtle polka dots, turned up sleeves and neck wraps flipped upside down from the previous season. Formal knitted dresses, wrap coats and pencil skirts further referenced a business outfit mood-board.

The strong silhouettes and puff-shoulder floral dresses came down the catwalk accessorised with pastel fur blankets, bejeweled clutch bags and leather gloves. The likes of red satin trench coats followed by turquoise and pink tartans kept the audience on their toes, as each individual look shone. Summed up, AW18 for Marc Jacobs makes Grace Jones’ heyday wardrobe the goal and we are happy to be a slave to the rhythm.
