MFW SS16: Marni

A lot of Marni’s collection for SS16 in many ways didn’t exactly resemble the usual and expected attire for the spring/summer season. Models with lashes like blinking eye dolls and tied up glossy hair with a 1920s wave walked around in multiple layers of clothing including leather and shearling jackets finished off by polo necks and knitwear.

Layering of oversized asymmetrical garments seemed to be Consuelo Castiglioni’s focus for this season. Boxy leather dresses and tops with black straps worn over long dresses, jackets, sleeveless polo necks and slouchy exaggerated wide trousers resembled aprons. See-through layers were also employed as tops and dresses in all colours filled with holes, a dress with cut-outs in the shape of tropical leaves or pieces made out of small connected circles were worn over and under.

The show was filled with colour – typical for Marni from bright yellow, red and blue to more subtle and earthy dark green and brown, including a tropical print, as print has always to be included in every Marni show, which brought the warmth of summer back in. Only in the finale the colour palette turned to monochrome and then into dramatic all-black satin.

Accessories were a major statement as big earrings in all shapes from spiral to square paired with multiple matching chunky bangles adorned the models’ ears and wrists, as well as sunglasses with thick frames and bags with wide handles were showcased. To bring a little bit of femininity back in, Castiglioni designed coats and long bomber jackets with belts tied at the waist in a bow and dresses covered with mermaid-like sequins again referencing the jazzy 1920s.
