MFW AW19: Prada

EVERY rose has its thorn. Remaining true to the tradition of the fashion week, Prada used a dimly lit runway, sparsely lit to highlight the excellence of their collection. The title of the collection was the Anatomy of Romance, a fitting name, but subversive in nature. The collection explores the dichotomy between lyricism and its dark nature, rather than purely expressing the sickly, puppy love side, we are shown a collection showcasing the twisted, mystery.

Using the “romance of life” as a source of inspiration manifested itself into a series of 3D flowers, lace overlays and lacquered rose print skirts. The fairytale-esque influence was seen entwined throughout. The models walk to the sound of Someday My Prince Will Come, Marilyn Manson and the score of the X Files, a reflection of the wilting and blooming flowers and love in the collection. Romance isn’t dead, but it begs the questions, in this political climate, is it dying?

As though a grown-up Wednesday Addams had created the collection, a parade of Dennis the Menace-type stripes, pigtails and moonboots came down the runway. On the flip side, military madness prevailed: service jackets juxtaposed pink army boots and sheer lace midi skirts. A mixture of toughness and femininity, Prada celebrated the duality of women, the strength but delicacy that they radiate.

Every facet of the femininity is presented, as we can do it all: the office boss with the herringbone ensemble, the romanticism presented through the floral applique and the solidity seen through the military influence. Really as rock’n’roll and hardcore as you can get; an exploration of those that deserve celebration.

Sweet and sour, Prada gives us a collection that is as diverse and transcendent as the current climate we live in.
