MFW AW18: Tommy Hilfiger

SPEEDING into first place, Gigi Hadid opened her fourth and final collaborative collection with Tommy Hilfiger for SS18. The See-Now-Buy-Now collection, aptly named TOMMYNOW “DRIVE”, didn’t shy away from theme as models prepared to strut around a racetrack surrounded by Formula 1 cars and checkerboard flags. Colour block leggings and crop tops indicates a sporty aesthetic from the off, with swimsuits and hoodies introduced later.

Tricolours or red, blue and white stay true to the Hilfiger brand, paired with an abundance of black to amplify the racing theme. Green and yellow accents touch on previous colour schemes used in Hilfiger collections. Patches and badges adorning the majority of the garments are synonymous with F1 logos and emphasise the theme, taken further with piping, checked belts and slogan waistbands.

Dedication to theme has allowed for various fabrics and garment types to be experimental and playful. Quilted elbow and knee patches take inspiration from practical motorsports wear, closely followed by dungarees and boiler suits also taking direct influence from clothing associated with racing uniform. However, later looks in the collection gradually become more casual and accessible, with variations of button-down shirts and denim two-pieces appealing to the mass market. Classic rugby-styled polo shirts are reminiscent of past Tommy Hilfiger collections, branded with racing graphics to be in cohesion. Last to cross the finish line, a series of evening dresses plastered in theme-related print and sporty styling.
