LFW SS19: Vivienne Westwood

VIVIENNE Westwood’s best advice has always been to Buy Less, Buy Well. This season, the brand has stepped away from runway shows again, and have chosen instead to have a digital launch of their collection. She believes if we had a culture instead of consumption that our environmental climate would not be such a mess due to the change of ethos. With this being said, her inspiration for this collection comes from how she is a Taoist – and a huge fan of Chinese art.

Vivienne Westwood grew to fame through her DIY approach to clothing, and nothing has changed. Playing cards were made into giant prayer flags for the t-shirts and kilts, which were then hand-painted, while camouflage is a consistent print through her collection as a symbol for her fight to save the world – as well as a favourite for punks (her initial fashion audience).

The collection began with a little vest, an item of clothing known to be extremely versatile – can be worn under a dress or worn with trousers. The vest is best worn with a pair of tailored trousers in Vivienne’s eyes, hence why she has created a huge collection of trousers for this season. For her autumn collection in 1980 – the pirate collection – the core item of the collection was the shirt. The importance of the shirt is that it has never changed in 500 years, an essential item of our wardrobes and one that is worn on a multitude of different occasions. Along with her spectrum of trousers this season, she’s added shirts. Her eclectic taste has shown through with a collection that is vibrant and full of energy.
