LFW SS17: Margaret Howell

MARGARET Howell presented a collection perfect for a relaxed British summer, in keeping with her casual and simple style. Walking around the house and garden in flat suede sandals with laces, cashmere hot-pants belted at the waist and paired with shirts unbuttoned enough to reveal the shoulders to hopefully catch some colour. Hot pants were also swapped for linen round midi-skirts or comfortable trousers and there were other alternatives to lounge around in, such as shirt dresses.

Howell also included dressier options, for the evening or work – metallic dresses, blazers and skirts. Those came in many versions – pleated, tulle or pencil – and were worn with light cashmere sweaters or/and button-downs, some with ruffled collars or silk pussy-bows, and always cinched at the waist by a contrasting belt.

The colour palette was dominated by black and a selection of earthy tones. Dark sophisticated shades like navy, burgundy and grey also appeared throughout. In contrast, occasional pop of baby blue and pink brought softness to the collection, in case the cashmere didn’t quite do it.

Keeping in mind the moody British weather, the designer introduced a selection of outerwear – a light navy robe-like coat, elegant trench coats in beige, black or khaki, black belted jacket from dyed denim and a brown parka.
