Glass visits the Chedi Andermatt, Switzerland

WHAT do you think of when you think of Switzerland? Perhaps it’s the salivating chocolate and decadent cheeses, the fine crafted watches or its infamous banks. But odds are you imagine its natural marvels of mountains, lakes and verdant fields that stretch as far as the eye can see. Or that it’s home to some of the best winter sports the world has to offer. About two hours from Zurich is a winter wonderland that epitomises the classic Swiss town while also being home to a luxury hotel with the addition of the Chedi Andermatt.

Andermatt is a small, quaint village nestled in the valley beneath the Adula Alps. It feels like something out of a fairy tale as the train climbs the track past scenic tarns, hillsides and mountain ranges before reaching this picturesque village. Normally you would look around once stepping off the train and spot the hotel immediately. Most high-end endeavours in small towns stand out like sore thumbs – but not the Chedi. It was specifically designed to mesh into the surrounding atmosphere with its alpine chalet exterior and large wooden frame.

Stepping into the hotel, you’re immediately greeted by a natural warmth and clear Zen influences mixed with classic wooden features. It’s soothing and puts you instantly at peace with its rooms, fireplaces and guests relaxing on plush furnishings. All 123 rooms contain a similar atmosphere – calming, relaxing, soothing and luxurious. With so many mountains towering over the village, the majority of rooms in the hotel have views of the snow-topped peaks and surrounding town – as well as a fireplace to curl up beside as the cold weather arrives.
