Glass takes time out at Sardinia’s Forte Village

WITH the sparkling seas of the southern Mediterranean as its backdrop, Sardinia’s Forte Village already has a head start on most other destinations. Just a short journey south-west from Cagliari, the resort – a self-contained sweep of hotels, suites and private villas blessed with high-end facilities and an army of well-attired staff – has redefined all-inclusive luxury in this sun-kissed corner of Europe, while retaining a family-friendly vibe.

Designed to meet visitors’ every need without occasion to leave the resort, Forte Village’s guests are equipped with a map upon arrival – a useful tool for navigating from forest to beach, spa to bar as well as the many dining options on offer. Ranging from seafront tavernas to elegant brasseries in the forest, Forte Village’s 21 restaurants are scattered throughout the resort and although you may not have time to experience them all, it’s definitely recommendable to try.

Michelin-starred chefs Alfons Schuhbeck and Gordon Ramsay have outposts here, as do a new wave of local rising stars. Sardinian delicacies, including spiny aragosta lobster, sea urchin and gelato are as much of a focal point as the haute cuisine at Forte Village, while a gourmet cooking academy also gives you the chance to take a few tips home with you.

A major draw at Forte Village is the spa, which boasts a thalassotherapy circuit among its myriad treatments and therapies. Inspired by the Greek belief in the healing powers of the sea, this seven-pool series of varying temperatures and sodium and potassium levels, and marine mud – yes really – allows guests to and recalibrate body and mind through the benefits of weightlessness. And, although initially disconcerting, it certainly works.

Elsewhere, there is a vast array of options including tennis and basketball courts and football pitches. Just a short distance away, guests can take excursions to the Roman ruins of Nora, while cycling and trips to the mountains behind the resort are also on the doorstep.
