Glass swoons over L’oscar, a magical new hotel in Bloomsbury

THE West End has been graced by the opening of L’oscar, a stunning five-star boutique property that oozes ambiance, class and first-rate service. Located in the middle of Bloomsbury, the listed Arts & Craft building dating from 1903, was originally the headquarters of the Baptist Church. Such weighty foundations are obvious, from the original interior features lovingly restored, to the robust atmosphere that can only be radiated through historic architecture.

The striking interiors largely contribute to the luxurious, otherworldliness of L’oscar. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a whirl of plush purple velvet, dazzling gold and dark lacquered walls. Such designs come courtesy of Jacques Garcia, responsible for the renowned Hôtel Costes in Paris. L’oscar is similarly sultry and would be perfect for those needing a hideout. There is even is private side exit for those looking to be especially discreet.

Not that anyone checking in will be leaving the property anytime soon – just wait until you see the bedrooms. Generous in size yet fantastically cozy, scarlett red walls are complemented by grand fireplaces, ornate ceilings and plush burgundy upholstery. Black and white marble bathrooms add to such elegance. It’s nice to know, as well, that each of the 39 rooms is unique in design, so every suite is truly individual.

The dazzle doesn’t end there. The hotel is home to a gorgeous bar and restaurant. Baptist Grill is located in the original octagonal 1903 chapel, the star feature of which is a striking glass dome. The grills ceiling is hand painted and surrounded by plaster and stenciled wall treatments. There is also Cafe L’oscar, on the hotel’s ground floor, with its mirror-lined walls and gilded panels. An all-day menu is served, including breakfast, and with such terrific cooking being carried out by Chef Tony Fleming and his team, it would be ridiculous if this didn’t become Holborn’s hot spot for a reliable yet special meal. The BBQ onion ravioli is to die for, and dessert is essential, if only to see the charming waiters wheel out the trolley filled with cheesecakes and éclairs.

Praise must also be given to the superb staff, who do an expert job of making guests feel at home, and really go out of their way to assist with special requests. The team at L’oscar is a most charming bunch and they create a genuine feeling of hospitality.

For those visiting London from afar, L’oscar would make for the most lovely holiday. For those closer to home, L’oscar makes the term “staycation” an absolute must. Go, and be swept off your feet.
