Glass enjoys organic luxury at Bamford Haybarn Spa, Brooklyn Bridge, NYC

THE opening of 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge last year created quite a stir. The luxury hotel brand, known for its first-rate eco-credentials and interest in sustainable design, transformed the local neighbourhood with its stunning architecture, impressive culinary experiences and welcoming community ambience. The love affair with this spot is expected to increase double-fold now that the Bamford Haybarn Spa has taken up residence.

The recent addition of this 5,000 square-foot retreat offers a wonderfully tranquil experience within beautiful surroundings, in line with the hotel’s unique, nature-focused interiors. Taking its design cues from traditional English farming haybarns, hand-carved doors are positioned next to delicate branch shelves, all bathed in soothing cream and beige tones. Such details are complemented by two full-length tree trunks seen in the reception as well as the treatment corridor. A heart motif, Bamford’s signature, is dotted throughout.

The company is the brainchild of British entrepreneur Carole Bamford, who also founded the Daylesford Organic Farmshops and has been a long-time advocate of holistic skincare and well-being. She was a pioneer in the field well before “green beauty” became a trend. The Bamford product line, which launched in 2006, and preceded the development of the spas, is deeply inspired by nature and are made in England using the purest, organic ingredients. Many meet the highest standard of organic certification from the UK’s Soil Association – no mean feat.

On my visit I experienced the Bamford Signature Facial. The session started with embers of palo santo wood being lit and used to cleanse the space, which helped to set the scene. The 80-minute treatment uniquely relies on excellent massage therapy – a combination of lymphatic drainage and stimulating lifting motions that feel really invigorating.

The lack of machinery was pleasing and my therapist’s skilled hands more than made up for the zero technology. This is how facials should be approached. All products used in the facial, from cleansing and exfoliation to hydration, are from the Bamford range, and felt extremely nourishing and gentle. These are products that simply work: in conjunction with the hard work of my therapist, they revealed clean, plump and glowing skin; something of a revelation.

Other than the Signature Facial, a more customised option is available that allows for bespoke requirements. A full range of body treatments are also on offer, including a Fully Body Exfoliation that uses a warmed sugar polish, and a Jade Hot and Cold Stone Massage.
