Glass enjoys fabulous Mediterranean cuisine at Miss Ada, New York

ISRAELI-born chef Tomer Blechman founded Miss Ada, his buzzing restaurant in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene, just over a year ago, and it has proven to be a huge hit. Rightly so: the food Blechman is putting out – dishes like falafel, hummus and kebabs – relies on the freshest seasonal ingredients to create innovative updates on traditional dishes. As well as this, the homey, welcoming space, manned by the most charming staff, creates a gorgeous dining experience that warrants multiple returns.

The menu is arranged into a few sections. Small plates consist of necessary favourites such as beet puree and baba ganoush, both of which were stunning during our recent visit. The latter came presented with the finest eggplant chips that were a unique addition. Intelligently, a whole section is devoted to the most popular Israeli dish of all – hummus. Here, the chickpeas dish is offered in three ways, including a lamb shwarma preparation, and a spring peas and tahini combo. If a Med-style restaurant can’t pass the hummus test, you know there’s a problem. Miss Ada, naturally, succeeds with flying colours.

A similarly must-have plate that guests will be looking for is falafel. Here, it is offered as an appetizer with feta cheese and olives. Another Israeli speciality, grilled meat skewers, will keep carnivores very happy – they come in the form of kofta, sirloin steak and short rib.

That delicious smoky flavour that we associate with grilled foods from the Mediterranean features in the main courses, in plates like za’atar crusted salmon and chicken with harissa. We tried the shakshuka – spicy poached egg in a rich, peppery tomato sauce, that was highly satisfying and packed with flavour.

The dish also makes an appearance on Miss Ada’s brunch menu, along with an excellent range of pitas and Yemeni pastries. So if you can’t make it for dinner, make sure to stop by on Sunday morning, the only time that brunch is served. Be aware, though, that the place will very likely be heaving. People just can’t stay away from food this good.
