Glass dines at Kitchen E20

KITCHEN E20 is spread out across the ground floor of The Stratford – an impressive 42-floor building, which combines longer stay loft spaces with selection of bars, restaurants, and event spaces, just a step away from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

From the first step, Kitchen E20 astonishes its guests with beautiful chandeliers hanging from high ceilings and ubiquitous branches of ivy and fern. The space is enclosed by glass windows, providing lots of natural light, looking especially eccentric soaked in the afternoon sun.

In the heart of the restaurant the guests can enjoy having an insight into a heaving open kitchen lead by the Executive Head Chef, Josh Deacon, where all the dishes are freshly prepared.

A long bar located at the entrance of Kitchen E20 is a perfect option for a quick pre-dinner drink if you still have a bit of time before your table is ready.

Kitchen E20’s menu is a mixture of modern British cuisine with Australasian influences and twists. Composed of a selection of smaller dishes, colourful salads and carefully curated larger mains, all plates are created with health and wellness in the focus.

Although heavily based on meat and fish, the chef did not forget about including a range of equally exciting vegetarian and vegan options. The broad menu is accompanied by a remarkable wine list, where everyone will find something for themselves.

Our evening began with a tuna tartare and a buffalo mozzarella, served in perfect portion sizes, still leaving us wanting more and excited for what main course is going to bring. The flavours were perfectly balanced, complimenting each other.

The highlight of the dinner was the poached cod with a carrot purée, samphire and sea beet salad was delicate yet absolutely flavourful, paired with my personal favourite side of charred purple sprouting broccoli with calamansi vinaigrette. From the first bite, it has transported me to a seaside town, instantly making me forget about London.

The freshness of the fish is guaranteed by its everyday delivery from Devon. Josh highlighted E20’s big focus on ensuring a sustainable way of ordering, trying its best to create the minimal amount of waste and avoiding over-ordering as he mentioned it is a current problem chefs need to battle in the food industry.

Post dinner, my guest and I enjoyed having a relaxing time in one of the massive and cosy armchairs in the Mezzanine Bar, hidden just above the restaurant. The space offers a variety of exciting events such as Open Deck Collective on Thursdays for anyone who wants to try their new set and Live Music Sessions on Fridays and Weekends, never leaving the guests bored!

The cocktail menu called The Authentic Life has been created based on the community created in The Stratford building. As the Mezzanine is a common space where all the inhabitants mix and socialize, the menu became an inspiration and an ode to their different lifestyles and an appreciation of their diverse ways of living.

Composed of 11 various drinks you can choose anything you fancy between The Nomad, The Bohemian, The Creative, The Minimalist and more.

I have been recommended by Marcello to try The Socialite. It is Mezzanine’s vodka-based signature cocktail; washed with coconut water, the clear drink is sweet and delicate. Its originality is particularly connected to the way it is served – with an extra shot on the side, which you can share with your friends, presenting you with a fully immersive social experience.

Each drink was an utter masterpiece prepared by Serge, who not only made the cocktails taste wonderful but also ensured an absolute visual delight.

The atmosphere of Kitchen E20 and The Mezzanine Bar is beyond comfortable and relaxed, making you wish you could stay for longer in The Stratford. Although in the busy area of East London, E20 is a great hideaway spot if you wish to escape from the loudness of the city to enjoy a wonderful meal and a relaxing evening drink.
