Glass enjoys a luxurious escape from the city at The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo

TOKYO will be catapulted into the limelight over the next 12 months – and for good reason. As in summer 2020, Tokyo will host the 2020 Olympics where over 600,000 overseas visitors are anticipated to head to the Japanese capital. Inside Japan Tours have curated bespoke packages for this global event which will also give sports fans an insight into this fascinating Asian country.

Midtown Tower. The Ritz-Carlton Tokyo

I’m staying at the Ritz-Carlton Tokyo ensconced in this urban oasis which occupies the top nine floors of the Midtown Tokyo skyscraper within the fashionable Roppongi district. The hotel’s unique location ensures a tranquil escape from the buzzing metropolis below, while affording a spectacular panoramic vista across the city with Mount Fuji visible in the distance on a clear day. My room is on the 53rd club level floor, where I am swiftly checked-in by a kimono-attired concierge, and can enjoy all-day access to the club lounge, with an array of drinks and sumptuous hot and cold buffet food (Japanese and Western) until late.

The Ritz-Carlton Tokyo

My vast bedroom’s décor is sleek and sophisticated – Japanese meets Italian style – with dark flooring, fabric covered walls and lots of plush velvet furnishings. My equally sizable marble-swathed bathroom includes a seperate cubicle featuring the most high-tech toilet I have ever seen – the array of mind-bobbling buttons on display offer to do everything automatically. Housekeeping is as smooth as my Frette bedlinen with a complimentary daily pressing service for up to five garments.

Towers Restaurant. The Ritz-Carlton Tokyo

The Ritz-Carlton attracts the designer-clad Tokyoites, who enjoy this smart urban hotel as a night-time destination for its fine cuisine and quality entertainment in the decadent lobby-lounge. Restaurants include the award-winning Michelin-star Azure 45 offering French cuisine, and the more casual Towers, a contemporary grill with an open-style kitchen featuring locally sourced ingredients.

The hotel is perfectly located to experience the local swanky nightlife, upmarket boutiques and contemporary art scene in Roppongi. Just make sure you make a reservation before all the sports fans arrive in this megacity.
