Glass announces 10th anniversary issue – Decade

ANNIVERSARIES are not just about celebration, but also an opportunity to evaluate the past and look to the future. And as we reflect on ten years of Glass, fittingly, we’ve chosen Decade as the theme of this issue. Back in 2009, the intention of the magazine’s founders, Nicola Kavanagh, Ben Slater and Tet Yap, was to create a platform where “stunning imagery could sit alongside intelligent content and enlightening social commentary – style and substance in the true sense, something we felt was missing from glossy magazines.”

Since then, due to their vision, and also tenacity, Glass has featured, in a most elegant way (if I dare say so myself) some of the most influential and esteemed people in the performing arts, fashion, literature, photography, philosophy and human rights – figures such as Yao Chen, Melvin Sokolsky, Jimmy Carter, Li Bingbing, Yayoi Kusama, Kristin Scott Thomas, the list is impressive and these are just a few – many more are presented in this anniversary issue.

And while we reflect on the past, we are very excited about what is to come, and in this special expanded anniversary issue which also debuts our new logo and redesign, we present some of the latest most inspiring performers such as Tiffany Young, Lou Doillon, Caleb McLaughlin, John Cho, Harry Shum Jr and Iwan Rheon; the brilliant British painter Tess Jaray; the humanitarian efforts of Katie Fergusson, Senior Vice President of Social Impact at The De Beers Group, and Laura Haynes, Chair of UN Women National Committee UK, as well as the best in fashion, jewellery, design, architecture and beauty.

To mark this very special anniversary, we have redesigned the magazine and our masthead. Our art director Peter Roden says, “The 10th anniversary of Glass was an opportunity to both reflect on its growth, whilst also forging a new direction as contemporary luxury fashion magazine. A new masthead is always a difficult brief. Myself and designer Tom Baber aimed to modernise, respect the content and heritage, make an impact and to an extent be invisible — without alarming and antagonising the readers.

“Our sophisticated and refined solution with its elegant proportions and subtle detailing, such as the slight tapering of the finer strokes, felt an appropriate fit for the contemporary fashion magazine. This alongside our new cover layout focuses on the clarity and communication of the content, harmonising type and image.

“We are thrilled to launch this with the public and hope they share the same enthusiasm for the future visual direction of Glass.”

We hope you enjoy our celebratory issue as much as we do. Here’s to the next decade of Glass.
