Fall 2014 Haute Couture: Dior

It was Christian Dior who proclaimed “I created flower women” and even now flora is still a stylistic linchpin that won’t budge at Dior, it’s the kind of subject matter that isn’t too flamboyant for Raf Simons’ fine-spun taste. Fall 2014’s collection of couture pieces was a flower showered washed out retrospective of fashion history’s most prevailing silhouettes, so chic was a given and modernity was the crosscurrent. To give the quiescently dramatic garments extra exposure Simons simulated the past glory of the intimate couture parlour, with models circulating close by the discerning audience members and variety of Dior ambassadors like Jennifer Lawrence and Charlize Theron.

The palette of hazy hues you’ll often see inconstantly in the summer sky were formed into a variety of shapes. From pert bustles to long morose floor-sweeping coats or simple little cutesy dresses set against the more mature grandiloquence of regal flower embellished jackets. Whilst the simplicity saw it through till the end it was all sparingly embellished with tactful grace, and the prodigality was sparing too, for this was your average day-by-day haute couture, something which most likely divided spectators. This was couture not created just for editorial sake but for ‘real life’ from Simons’ perspective, yet a large proportion of its partisan’s want the dream instead, so understandably this is interesting territory which should be documented thoroughly in future.

The pointed heels were obviously on point sending a continuous jolt of energy throughout the show, the most exemplary accessory to consciously modern couture. Fall 2014 haute couture was a show that tried to tug on your heart strings, the sheer beauty of the orchid drenched set and buffet of bold clear-cut shapes both achieved this to some end. It was classic puritanically refined couture that demands a level of appreciation that sadly many people lack. If there does happen to be something else you require, redirect yourself to the full length mink coats and outlandish couture flight/jump suits, which prove Simons will always have that little bit extra.
