Bridget Riley, Prints 1962-2015, opens at Sims Reed Gallery

After exhibiting her work for a number of years, Sims Reed Gallery has for the first time curated a comprehensive exhibition of the innovative post-war artist Bridget Riley.

Unmistakably abstract, Riley’s work spans from 1962 to the present day and is shown here in segments, sign-posting the defining periods in her longstanding career. Often viewed as radical, typified by her hypnotising graphic formations and later in the 1980’s with a shift to working in colour; today Riley is more realistically a figurehead of modernity and innovation, her striking geometric constellations produced at the beginning of her career are arguably still as relevant and timeless as her work produced today. Accrediting her use of colour and form, Riley was the first woman to win the Dutch Sikkens Prize back in 2012.

The importance of Riley’s parallel with screenprinting and painting is emphasised through the rare chance to view the complete set of Fragments (1965). With both mediums sequentially arranged, Riley’s position in influencing and re-defining screenprinting as a fine art technique is reasserted once again.

From transfixing monochrome through to smooth rippling colours, we’re taken on an explorative retrospective journey with Riley at the helm.
