AW19 MFW: MSGM

INSPIRED by coming of age and rom-com cinema, MSGM debuts its AW19 collection at MFW. Vividly coloured with 90s’ pop culture and bubblegum pop, the collection spins an imaginary rom-com narrative, with Giorgetti stating in his post show notes, “Like characters in movies, we can tell so many stories with our clothes. These are stories that are both about our real lives, and the lives we dream of living.”

Overlaying Giorgetti’s expressions of romance and film, the collection explores the different symbols and imagery of 90s’ rom-coms. Incorporating a strong use of red, as well as heart prints and cutouts, the collection arrives fittingly just after Valentines day, indulging an alluring, but extravagant, romantic charm. Hearts can even be found through the collections use of embroidery, with broken hearts embroidered onto tailoring, representing the turbulent whirl-wind romances found in cult rom-coms. With its fanciful prints and patterns, the collection also intwines a sense of romance through its experimentations with shapes and silhouettes, bringing heart-shaped necklines, loose, flowing silhouettes, and refined tailoring to convey its feeling of the amour.

In ode to the era in which the greatest rom-coms were produced, the collection takes on a 90s’ flare, with an abundance of velvets, oversized outerwear, and even PVC. Presenting high fashion through a rose-tinted lens, the designs encompass everything bubblegum and excessive, daring to remake one of the most popular genres of film on the catwalk. If fashion can tell a story, the MSGM AW19 collections tells a story of love, romance, and extravagance.
