LFW AW19 : Preen

A show inspired by rave culture, techno music, and the late ‘80s dance revolution, Preen encapsulates the glamour of the era and the spirit of punk. Experimenting with ‘80s trends and styling, the collections vibrance parallels its setting, an open spaced warehouse fitted with multi-coloured poles, created in collaboration with “the church maker of modern times” Ben Kelly.

Renowned for their refined and often understated designs, Preen may not be the first brand you think of when considering rave culture and its influence on fashion. However, rather than remaking ‘80s designs, Preen instead takes influences from the eras spirituality, energy, and social climate. Fitting the culture of dance and music around their own signature sophisticated style, we see the brand take certain influences and incorporate into the clothing, for example sewing sequins into the pieces or reinventing quintessentially ‘80s shapes and silhouettes. The collection also draws inspiration from East Asian style, featuring satin florals and kimono-style dresses.

Mixing and matching several different prints, from checks to florals, the collection is vivid with colour, while maintaining an appealing sense of wearability. Similarly, Preen mixes different textures, crepe, chiffon, fur, and satin, brought together with an abundance of embellishments and embroidery. A diverse colour palette, Preen interlays neutrals with neons with monochrome, paying ode to the eclectic variations of ‘80s rave trends. Elevating ‘80s raver style with a contemporary edge, the brand intwines structured tailoring and refined knitwear with party energy.

Chic, stylish, and fun, Preen stepped out of their comfort zone for their rave culture inspired fall collection.
