First in a series of six, Glass gets exclusive backstage access at NYFW SS15 and talks to some designers showing there about their latest work and to learn what drives them to create. To begin with, Glass speaks to Son Jung Wan who is one of South Korea’s most successful fashion designers.

What inspired your latest SS15 collection?
I am inspired by the theory of duality and the yin and yang concept for this show. Both ideas embrace the instance of contrast.
This season, I showed a contemporary twist on traditional style. It could be referred to as Modern Retro. I love retro style because it is full of vitality and I wanted to include this excitement with the chic, modern aesthetic.

In five words or less, describe your design aesthetic.
A balanced aesthetic

How did you get your start in fashion?
My major in college was fine arts and I studied fine arts in high school as well so I always thought that I would become an artist. I was fortunate to work for an artist who took me under her wing and encouraged me to try fashion design.

In 1989, after graduating from design school, I decided to launch my fashion label and opened a small shop to sell my first full collection. I decided to give it a year to see how my collection would be received and I was delighted when pieces started selling quickly!  At the time I was a young, unknown designer and to have done so well in a short amount of time I knew making women look and feel beautiful through my designs was what I was meant to do.

Where do you go for inspiration?
I find inspiration in just about everything in my life; art, music, movies, traveling…

Who is your favourite designer working in fashion today?
Karl Lagerfeld because I truly respect his passion

Do you have any advice for young people wanting to break into the industry?
I like to tell students and young designers that they should never give up on their goals and to dream big.  Most importantly enjoy what they are doing.
