Glass visits the Amala, Bali

AFTER a hectic week, a great relief Leaving Hong Kong behind in the rain and heavy winds and falling temperatures. After a few hours flight … Bali, known as The Island of The Gods,to be greeted by a soft warm air and gentle winds and a welcome at the Amala very welcoming.

The Amala is in Seminyak only 6.4km from the international airport. Though centrally situated along a busy street lined with shops and restaurant, the villas seemed sound-proofed and totally isolated – a world away After a delightful welcome by Wawan, who was a combination of a concierge and host, we were escorted through a beautifully landscaped area. We passed the Bamboo restaurant,  the outdoor dining room poolside, the main pool, the spa and a small and very cosy library before getting to our villa.

Our Spa Villa, one of six, was 120 sq m in size. We entered into the large sun deck, partially open to the sky, with a flowering tree over the jet-plunge pool. The rain shower was big enough for a couple, with a large canopy bathtub for those inclined and outstanding amenities. The bedroom had a king-sized canopy four-poster bed  guaranteeing  a perfect night’s sleep in what felt like a quiet cocoon. The bedroom was behind the sliding glass doors which open on to the pool and the dining area was very quiet and private.

The Bamboo restaurant, located next to the main pool, is open from breakfast to late in the evening. However room service is also available. We opted to take our meals besides the plunge pool in our villa. The in-villa menu is fabulous offering everything from local Indonesian offerings to the fluffiest banana pancakes I have ever had. From the time we called in our order, the knock on the door with the tray seemed to take only a few minutes. In room dining is available 24 hours a day. The Amala also offers Indonesian cooking lessons which we look forward to on our next visit.

Butler service is available around the clock and  there is a complimentary mini bar with soft drinks, juice and water and a cookie jar that seems to be refilled before I could finish the bowl.

Wawan arranged for a car and driver for us to explore the island and after seven hours in and out of our air-conditioned car into very high temperatures (Bali is practically on the equator) the spa was a very welcome destination. The spa offers a choice of treatments. I had two one-hour Balinese massages that were very vigorous and strong. The masseuse was flawless. I emerged from both feeling totally relaxed and refreshed. The spa also offers yoga and meditation.

Amala means pure and unspoiled in Sanskrit … but while we were at The Amala we were very spoiled indeed.
