FLORALS? For spring? Ground-breaking. Valentino paid attention to Miranda Priestly’s disapproval of spring florals and used them for aesthetic inspiration throughout their AW18 collection at PFW. Classy as always, Valentino showcased a range of garments focusing on exquisite tailoring and construction. Presented in an evolving rainbow of colour, graphic flower prints that have been abstracted and enlarged adorn various looks.
Maturity radiates from the collection; elegantly draped fabric complements the body’s natural contours whilst conservative necklines and hem-lengths brings and amplified air of sophistication. Although a mature range of silhouettes, youth comes through over-powering print and popping colour. Complimenting this, flamboyant fringing, feathers and scalloped edges – a feature in previous Valentino collections – creates a playful and naïve aesthetic.
Colour blocking is seen throughout, with depth coming from layering and draping. Ruching and pleating allow for tremendous volume that consequently brings drama, taken further with textured lace and billowing capes. Styling choices suggests a continuation of the floral inspiration, with headscarves that are suitable for any gardener and dangling, leaf-like earrings. Hooded garments with sculpted ruffles create a petal illusion around the head and brings a whimsical vibe. Although formal throughout, the collection’s finale brings an array of evening dresses adorned with further floral motifs.
