PFW AW15: Maison Margiela

Paris Fashion Week continued today with Maison Margiela’s idiosyncratic take on AW. This show has been greatly anticipated because it was to be John Galliano’s first Ready-to-wear for Maison Margiela. The show is a blend of the minimalism anonymous Margiela and the history and drama-infused Galliano. The styling is all Galliano, but the simplicity in some of the cuts and styles maintains and develops the history of the house of Margiela. Overall it made for a unique collection of unusual and wearable looks.

Galliano’s creations cover anything you could possibly want for this coming season. There’s a variety of coats, sheer fabrics, fully feathered coats and skirts, colourful accents, low cuts, high necks, the list goes on. It would be nice to be able to say that the collection contains a few stand-out pieces, but really each outfit has a fully developed personality that tends to personify Galliano’s whimsical approach.

Most of the models who step out on the runway are sporting dramatic winged eyeliner, but every now and again one of the models will come out with nothing short of toned down clown make-up in neon hues. As peculiar as that may seem, it works somehow in making one pay attention to the show while still being entertained.

The collection is seemingly lacking in coherence but does maintain a consistent theme throughout in terms of  the person who might wear it – someone who may be willing to do colourful make-up or wear neon accents. It’s an individualistic collection for anyone who isn’t looking for a simple little black dress.

Galliano’s first non-couture collection with Maison Margiela would appear to be a success.
