Paris Menswear SS16: Maison Margiela

For SS16 in Paris, Maison Margiela resounded with drama. It was a collection comprised of many structured pieces as well as a few more relaxed vest-style tops, with overcoats sporting hemlines that nearly grazed the floor, with a few necklines echoing this trend.

The first section of the collection was all about seizing your attention and wresting you into the show. Nothing but black and white was to be seen for the first few garments. The collection then took a calmer turn with looser fitting clothing working their way on to the catwalk before  – bam! A metallic silver suit with a neckline slashed to the model’s naval. Once this piece stalked down the runway, the collection took a little less turn and felt more truly like a SS collection.

As far as colour is concerned, Margiela had the whole spectrum covered, with the looks moving through all the colours. However, the collection began and ended with monochrome looks. There was a slight hint of femininity near the end of the collection expressed by how the tops and sleeveless coats are draped. However overall the collection is strong and masculine, even the fabric choices feel strong, not including the few chiffon appearances.

The house of Margiela has created a very wearable collection for the SS16 season. The pieces are daring, dramatic, masculine and all could be sold straight from the runway.
