Paris Menswear AW15: Paul Smith

It’s good to see a designer at the helm of his eponymous house still staking claim to the designs that it presents to its consumer, especially in the case of British formal menswear mainstay Paul Smith. Flaunting some of the strongest shoulder pads and most flattering forms we’ve seen all season, and we mean all season, Smith has kept it sensible in his attempt to prove that good clothing wins out in the end.

Henceforth it was good clothing in every sense of the word good. From the basic but bold stripes to the more understated cool floor-length puffa jackets and peach, yes peach, which is not necessarily a popular colour choice for Fall time menswear but a zesty more daring one. In that way, designs like this demonstrate what menswear should be about, a gallant cavalier attitude, dolled up in Smith’s new Wall Street jackets that hark back to time when alpha males thought they could get away with it all. Full length furs reverberated this and along with, for instance – albeit more demurely, some silky scarfs tied whole looks together.

This was a collection for the real men out there, ones who still know what they want and can get it with the click of their fingertips, so it’s wonderful to see he still has a designer of lifestyles in Paul Smith.
