NYFW SS15: Monique Lhuillier

Inspired by the natural colours of a sunrise, Monique Lhuillier’s Spring Summer collection was a sea of glowing pastels. Already known for her ultra-feminine evening gowns, the designer shifted her focus to daywear with casual, slouchier silhouettes and experimentation with newer “techy” fabrics.

A fine example of classically feminine dressing with a twist, Lhuillier used contrasting elements to her advantage. Structured drop waist shorts and cellophane-like skirts were balanced by cinched in belts and layers of tulle, all transported down the runway by ombre Lucite heels. A sheer iridescent shirt paired with ocean-printed neoprene trousers gave the impression of glimmering water during sunrise. Textures like metallic matelassé and rose lame gleamed in the light, giving a luminous, almost otherworldly effect. Black voile layered over a mesh bodice and a reflective, waffle weave copper skirt proved to be one of the edgiest looks of the show.

The show ended with a series of Lhuillier’s signature pretty evening dresses. While beautiful, it was her earlier mix of feminine dressing with unusual fabrics that stole the limelight, making it one of Lhuillier’s stronger collections.
