NYFW AW16: Altuzarra

Altuzarra’s show for AW16 was set in a bohemian yet very dynamic atmosphere. The models walked down the runway in a fast tempo, responding to the pace of the accompanying music, looking fierce with eyes underlined with black curled eyeliner, while the presented clothes was in a gypsy-style.

This season, Joseph Altuzarra was playing with mixing patterns, paisley, stripes and tiny florals covered smooth jacquards of tailored jackets and trousers, silk dresses and leathers, including high boots covered in the same patterns. The inspiration was particularly apparent in long fluid paisley dresses, covered with sequins tracing the pattern at the end of the show, and big shearling coats emphasising the nomadic lifestyle of the gypsies.

Knitwear to keep us warm was introduced in the form of jumpers with fringe detail or contrasting weaving, often weaving in leather stripes. On a more elegant note, which Altuzarra has become known for, pencil skirts, blazers and relaxed tailored trousers with velvet stripes added balance with long “talisman” earrings and paisley scarfs used as belts or wrapped around handbag handles as accessories.

The emphasis of the silhouette throughout the show was on the waist, cinched with leather belts. Stripes were also shown in the form of patchwork colour blocking, bringing in more colour as most of the show was carried out in black and white combinations, with touches of burgundy and occasional blue.

If we keep up with the spirit that Altuzarra presented to us, next winter might be overflowing with joy, dancing and singing, in the style of gypsies.
