NYFW AW15: Donna Karan

Donna Karan’s latest collection seems to be inspired by the very city that she is showing in. New York has a reputation for its towering skyscrapers and concrete jungle aesthetic, and Karan seems to be echoing that in her autumn 2015 collection.

Within the first few looks there is clearly an architectural interest in many of the garments that glide down the runway. The first overcoat is riddled in texture and visual interest without being a crazy concoction of colour. The palette used throughout the collection is chic, sleek, and simplistic.

The jackets are clean cut, the trousers are structured, and the dresses flow with the movement of the models, all things to be regularly expected of the garments. However, they all have layers of structural pleats and well-defined textures that make the clothing wearable without being dull.

The entire show exists within Donna Karan’s vision of New York, even utilising the New York skyline as a backdrop for the entire show. Much of the colours are inspired by the city, with the only exception being a show stopping pure white coat with cut-outs along the dramatic collar. It’s a collection that New York should be proud to have inspired.
