NYFW AW2014: Diane von Furstenburg

Belgian-born American designer Diane von Furstenberg’s catwalk show hosted in New York City last night marked a major milestone in the designer’s lengthy and successful career – the 40th anniversary of her eponymous label.  Her collection entitled Bohemian Wrapsody was every bit as fitting as the pun intended as it was this signature wrap dress that makes DVF one of a kind.

The former princess revealed look after look, featuring patterns and prints in colourful variations. Smiling models showed off multi-layered outfits of all kinds – mainly dresses in different lengths. Bohemian patterns, belted pieces of swinging fabric, plunging necklines and sparkly fabrics ensured the wrap look was far from being ordinarily classic.

Prints and patterns are also essential to a Von Furstenberg garment, and there was no deficit of these in the collection. Stars, geometric patterns and flowers, blended together, were prominent in the looks presented.

The celebrations of this special anniversary started last month on the west coast in Los Angeles, and continue in New York at a new venue for DVF named Spring Studios.  Von Furstenburg took a moment to reflect on the past four decades with this statement, “I used to take the wrap dress for granted, and sometimes I even resented it. Now that I decided to honour it, I’m proud of it, of its timelessness.”
