Glass talks to New York-based designer Mona Kowalski of A Détacher about her latest work and to learn what drives her to create beautiful work.

Kowalski was born in Poland, however her family moved to Baltimore in the US when she was nine where she grew up. After taking a degree in political science in Chicago, she studied fashion in Italy where subsequently she worked designing for small labels. After which she lived in Paris for four years where she was head of Sonia Rykiel’s design studio for a short time. She moved to New York where she opened her shop and design studio in 1998.

A Détacher is known for its intellectual architectural, sharp designs – each one exploring the form and function of the garment. She is “passionate about the construction of clothing” and makes all her own patterns.
