Milan Menswear SS16: Versace

At Versace this season Donatella didn’t alter her ideal man too drastically but emphasised one detail in particular – length is important. And so it was. Cue elongated silhouettes which extended the end of each garment a few sizes over the “correct” fit. Cut in slinky figure-hugging silks that hung on strong shoulders, this season was a collection that carried its own from start to finish.

Once again Versace has played it smart for its latest menswear offering, putting together 45 creations that shook up chic power-tailoring and dressed down leisurewear in deep musky hues that were all typically on brand and only featured an all-but-nondescript trim of baroque prints.

It’s curiously cool to see Donatella’s finger remain on the pulse of each wave of youthquake in 2015 as well, suffusing this season with a hipsterish contemporary motif in a handful of pieces. It is also clearly Versace’s aim to keep one step ahead of the consumer’s “idea” of the brand’s aesthetic to keep their luxury market on their toes.

Thanks to the experimental shapes and warped sizes they played around with this season – sometimes a hit and sometimes a miss too – it’s a given that the more audacious menswear shoppers already accustomed to the fashion house will keep coming back for more.
