Milan Fashion Week SS14: Missoni

It has been a dramatic year for the Missoni family – a serene focus on the elements, earth, wind, fire and water, maybe even a subconscious wish for a holiday escape, defined Angela Missoni´s collection in Milan yesterday. Featuring rocks, waves or flocks of birds, she introduced prints with a distinct cartoon aesthetic, and updated the signature knits with repetitions of these naive shapes. The Missoni name was reinterpreted in simple black geometrics – a very modern and desirable take on the logo. Black dominated this Spring/Summer show – it seems summer black is a stayer trend – accents were bright orange and blue, red and sea green.

Draped and wrapped casually around the body, the volumes and silhouettes had a sense of effortless ease – at times successful, at times not. A petite black sleeveless shirt in the new logo print combined with a printed wrap skirt, complete with resin bangles opening the show, and its later printed shirt and knit pencil skirt versions were some of the high points, so was a white asymmetric printed dress. Voluminous black coats with elbow-length sleeves paired with bright blue patent trousers were more troublesome – the same could be said for stray ribbon drape elements across the shoulders that felt somewhat like an afterthought.
