MFW SS19: Versace

YOU can spot a Versace ensemble a mile away. For what reason? Season after season, there’s an enduring appeal through its stark presentation of glamour. Donatella unveiled the Italian house’s SS19 collection last night during Milan Fashion Week, and as per Versace, it was a parade of all things floral, feminine and free. Flower power, you might ask? Why yes – the phrase has never been more fitting for a fashion collection.

The show opened with a set of bright covered looks. A cherry coloured satin jacket was styled atop a stripe turtleneck and woven printed tights. Too much clash? Perhaps, but as far as Donatella was concerned, no amount of print could be too much. The show notes affirmed that, describing the designer as the one woman who is never afraid. That point was proved through 54 looks – with her Versace clan being donned in feminine print at pretty much any possible opportunity. It covered denim jackets, mini dresses, tights, tops – you name it. While florals may be a tad predictable for collections catered to spring and summer, Versace knows how to take the seasonal staple one step further. Aka: through the art of layering.

Across an array of looks, almost every form of fashion piece was styled together. It may have been excessive, but the iconicity of the Versace house grants that sense of drama a complete commendation. The brand is legendary for it’s continual revival of glitzy garments, after all. Glamour also took a casual twist as, to the surprise of most, many models were travelling in trainers. A Versace code? Not traditionally – until now. It makes sense given the high demand for chunky sneakers by, well, pretty much everyone. Versace’s versions were unveiled in optimistic hues, and with them, a bounce of energy raced.

And so Versace took a turn towards the modern. That manoeuvre is arguably a frequent occurrence for the brand, as Donatella continually revives the house’s coded glamour into collections that always feel fresh and always impress. Who’s ready for a print proclamation?
