Once upon a time, everything was perfect, impervious and timeless in a bubblegum pink Barbie world and Moschino gave us the chance to experience that again with its totally dolly motif-full SS15 collection.
The house’s last season’s fast food chain theme was replaced by voluminous platinum blonde wigs, fuchsia, pink, aqua and fluorescent yellow tiny shorts and tops to the beat of Life in Plastic is Fantastic. What else created this sense of fun? Pink biker jackets, towel dresses in colour-pop hues, girly giant bows, pool-friendly, phone-shaped bags – while the models’ attitude was a witty play on the bimbo stereotype. The Barbie theme was also evident even before the show started, since mini-Barbie dolls and pink mirror-phone cases were waiting for the audience in the front row.
There was a wide array of Barbie style on the catwalk – roller Barbie, disco Barbie, evening gown Barbie and so on – while the summery mood was also emphasised by hot swimwear. We also saw oversized gold chains, golden sleek gabardine and tulle gowns but I personally coveted an adorable, chic, button-up, camilo in suede gabardine teamed with a silk scarf.
The first impression was that this collection was weighed down by this over-the-top slightly kitsch aesthetic, but then I relaxed and I just enjoyed it because it simply contained so much fun, inspiration and innovation. As Jeremy Scott said, he and the iconic toy “just want to bring joy to people” and he undeniably succeeded in serving up just that.
