MFW AW18: Fendi

THE NON sine qua of Italian fashion, Fendi didn’t let us down with their AW18 collection at MFW. Showcasing, yet another, collection excelling in advanced tailoring and sophistication, Fendi produced an extremely accessible collection, with a range of garments suitable for all generations. The inspiration touches on a sentimental level, as the collection incorporates aesthetic influences taking reference from trends in fashion history, allowing us all to enjoy a sense of nostalgia.

Oversized pockets and exaggerated shoulder pads are an impressive allusion to the ‘80s trend, complimented by structured tailoring representational of power dressing. A touch on ‘40s post-war fashion is notable, with utilitarian trench coats and conservative silhouettes. Themes of Western high fashion and late ‘90s to early ‘00s come in the form of cowboy boots, overwhelming checks and winged hoods suggesting street style undertones. As we have seen before from Fendi, garment shapes pay attention to balance and proportion as daring silhouettes accomplish a contemporary aesthetic.

A mature colour palette of rich brown and soft greys is complemented with the addition of bright accent colours and modern graphics. Cyan blue and mustard invigorate the collection on a whole, a trademark of Fendi’s expert use of colour. Fendi’s choice to incorporate the Fila typeface into their branded jumpers excited audiences with the possibility of future collaboration – an increasingly popular trend in recent fashion. The collection ended on a high as a series of printed outfits paved the way for a dramatic, all-black finish.
