MFW AW16: Gucci

Gucci kicked off MFW in style this week, delivering a fashion renaissance to eager viewers, after a fashionably late start. Alessandro Michele has been creative director of Gucci for the last 12 months and in that time has invigorated the brand as well as applying his own Michele hallmark to the clothes.

In contrast to his SS15 collection, this season the Gucci woman has developed a serious attitude and swagger. Contrasting against the many layers of last season, this collection had cleaner lines bringing out the beauty and wearability of the pieces.

However the usual warm appeal of Gucci was confused and nearly lost in the shows presentation choices, including strobing neon lights and white noise, which contradicted the beloved Gucci aesthetic. Or, perhaps this is Michele’s way of signifying a new era for Gucci and introducing the collection designed around the girl with attitude.

Michele is know better by his 29.6k Instagram followers as Lallo25, and it’s possible his fall collection was a reflection of the conflicting ‘busyness’ of information available to us on-line. His show pulled on different eras for inspiration and embodied many intricate skills, hence his show being a self declared fashion ‘renaissance’ of our generation.

Referencing the puffy shoulders of the 1980s, bodices that graced the dresses of the 16th century and a touch of 1970s disco, the show was eclectic renaissance of recent fashion. Key items include suede wedges, net- veiled hats, 80s diamanté-framed glasses, 70s lamé disco sandals, ankle length socks and velour wide-brimmed fedoras.

The bags are projected to be a big sell for Gucci. The Gucci embossed, glossy black shopper is adorned with the gratified slogan ‘real’, designed by New York street artist Trouble Andrew – a nod towards Michele’s obsession to street style. Also on the trend of fortune telling, with the upcoming Oscar’s this weekend the show could also be a hint to what we can expect to see on the red carpet. This includes the kaleidoscopic ruffled dress and the show stopping finale dress – the floor skimming tulle spearmint gown with balloon sleeves.

With another gorgeous show complete and a reported 5% rise in sales in the last quarter of 2015, one prediction that can be made for sure, is that there are only good things on the horizon for Michele and his era of Gucci.
