Jean Paul Gaultier’s Butterfly Couture Spring 2014

French couture designer Jean Paul Gaultier revealed his couture collection via a runway full of burlesque models in Paris yesterday.  The collection was every bit a theatrical production as it was catwalk show.  Series of themed glamorous costumes were accessorised, styled, and presented in a very flamboyant way.

The first part of the show was comprised of fancy garments that were elaborated with butterfly headpieces, detailed stockings, long gloves, fierce stilettos, lace,  capes, headdresses, and even cigarettes.   The bold makeup and hairdos continued on and swinging long necklaces, glitter and sequins started to appear with ruffled trains of flowing fabrics that emanated glamorous flapper style.

A surprise appearance on the catwalk by Dita Von Teese, American actor and burlesque dancer was the highlight and also grand finale of the show.  Dita wore an electric blue butterfly ensemble complete with black stilettos, long gloves and sexy thigh high stockings.  Snapping cameras and the buzzing of voices could be heard above the music as Von Teese strut up and down the catwalk, her final walk through finding Gaultier himself running after her to embrace her in a hug from behind and a give her kiss of gratitude.

This has been an excellent year so far for Gaultier in terms of brand exposure.  Gaultier’s exhibition The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier, from the Sidewalk to the Catwalk will be featured in his hometown Paris in April 2014.  The exhibition so far has attracted more than one million visitors.
