Italian restaurant Fucina launches a weekend brunch menu in Marylebone, London

THE latest offering by Kurt Zdesar, the restauranteur that opened the hugely successful Chotto Matte in London’s Soho and Black Roe in Mayfair, comes Fucina, located in Marylebone. This swish organic eatery offers exquisitely heart-warming Italian fare and their new brunch offering does not disappoint.

The stunning undulated red-brick lined ceiling echoes rather effectively the interior of a pizza oven. The windows, which hug a corner of a busy street, are cleverly shielded from passers-by with green hand-made bespoke glass and steel screens, affording plenty of light and privacy to diners eager to enjoy a leisurely moment in the heart of London. A large buffet table is decoratively piled high with plates of home-made breads, cakes, croissants and perfectly formed custard and chocolate bombolinis (Italian doughnuts).

The menu, designed and executed by the talented Italian chef, Stefano Stecca, is concise yet varied with an array of fruits, cereals and pancakes one would expect to find on a brunch menu. However, the egg dishes all have a distinct Italian twist to them, such as the crispy thin-based pizzas served up with a large selection of Italian vegetables, cheeses or charcuterie with the choice of poached or soft baked egg toppings. Service was efficient yet managed to emulate the relaxed weekend atmosphere under the watchful eye of Lorrenzo, the warm and convivial floor manager.

I opted for one of the three choices of pasta dishes on offer which was mouth-wateringly tasty – home-made tortelloni stuffed with fresh wilted spinach and soft melt-in-the-mouth ricotta, all drenched in a rich walnut cream sauce. To follow, I indulged in the bombolini which I had spotted on display when I had entered the restaurant. It was light, it was soft, it was filled with the sweetest, creamiest custard that I have ever tasted – put it this way–  it was so good I took one home to savour for later.
