Haute Couture Spring 2015: Atelier Versace

One of the pleasantries that comes with Spring season Couture, a gilded sphere that generally does not permit access to the masses, is deliberating over the dresses that are probably going to be filled by Hollywood hourglass figures on the award-show red carpets over the next few weeks. When it comes to Donatella Versace this is even more applicable, because Versace is as Versace does, and they do Hollywood goddess like no other house.

Assembling an assortment of sunset people regulars, from Kate Hudson to mother Goldie Hawn, Versace boasted figure-hugging dresses, slips that snaked from head to toe and suits with peekaboo cutouts. Iconic fashion faces, including our current Winter Issue covergirl Eva Herzigova, did the collection complete justice, becoming a picture in royal blue, lipstick red, atomic white and jet black; the Versace couture colour codes.

Donatella did however try to intersperse her new slightly re-aligned Versace brand identity staples into the collection, with simple sparkly swirls of figurative embellishment savouring all the Swarovski sparkle we are accustomed to. It came off a little bit c. 1991 Versace too, so that was fun.  The creative director is still going strong however, and by all means went hard before she went home by presenting a stocked 48 piece collection.

This was on the more loud side for Couture, but made for a nice opener on the schedule. We wouldn’t trade in Donatella’s Versace for the world, and those final few dresses are an absolute must for anyone who knows what Versace is and should always really be about, selling sex.
