SUMMER clothes seek out summer-ready bodies, so it’s only natural that we’re suddenly thinking about how to get smoother, toned skin in time for that trip to the beach. The Slim and Trim Body Treatment offered at Guerlain Spa in New York is an excellent first step in preparing yourself for such outings, as well as the general day-to-day routines of summer living.

The stunning spa is situated at the equally beautiful Plaza Hotel, which is just steps away from Manhattan’s Central Park. It’s a grand and warm entrance: bright green foliage mixed with pretty white orchids hangs behind the reception desk, a nod to the orchids famously used in Guerlain’s Orchidée Impériale line. A sizeable boutique is positioned to the left, where the full range of make-up, skincare and perfumes is available to browse. The iconic brand has been in operation since 1828 – certainly no small feat – and it’s exciting to see vintage hero fragrances such as Shalimar and Habit Rouge on display, as well as new classics like La Petite Robe Noire.
Other than the boutique, there are two spacious lounge areas: the formal sitting area which is replete with elegant armchairs; and a separate, dimmed room where guests wait for their therapist. Having this much space is really quite a treat, creating an airy ambience.

So, onto the treatment. First thing to mention is therapist Marc, who is one of the best masseurs I have ever had. If you visit Guerlain Spa, ask for Marc! The Slim and Trim service is massage-heavy and very intense, in the most enjoyable way. Skin is pummelled and stretched using vigorous movements in order to promote circulation, which in turn helps to reduce the appearance of cellulite and create a toning effect. After a preliminary massage and scrub, a thick, crumbly mask was applied all over to help tighten the skin. To help seal in all the goodness, I was consequently wrapped up in large plastic sheets, and a soothing head massage was administered by Marc whilst the mask worked its magic.

Following a quick shower to remove the mask, a second massage commenced, where Marc used Guerlain’s Ultimate Restoring Cream. Having another round of intense massage was a real indulgence, making my skin feel truly revitalised.
Looking in the mirror afterwards, my skin was noticeably smoother and glowed wonderfully. But other than creating a lovely skin texture and firmer silhouette, the Slim and Trim treatment is a fantastic emotional pick-up for when you’re getting ready to enjoy the summer.
