Getty Villa will open reinstalled galleries with antiquities collection in Spring 2018

THE Getty Museum in Los Angeles will re-open the renovated, reimagined galleries that house its antiquities collections at the Getty Villa. The Getty Villa, which is located in Malibu, was the original site of the Getty Museum until 1997, and in 2006 was remodelled and transformed into an educational centre dedicated to the arts and culture of ancient Greece, Rome and Etruria.

The Getty Villa has been expanded – there is now 3,000 square feet more gallery space. The collection in the Getty Villa has been re-organised – it was previously ordered thematically, but in the reimagined villa they will be arranged chronological to chart the historical development of classical art from the Neolithic period (7000 – 3200 BC) to the Roman Imperial Period (6000 BC – 600AD). Additionally, one new gallery will be dedicated to the Classical World in Context which features important long-term loans  from major international museums of art pieces that represent cultures that engaged with ancient Greece and Rome.

The re-opening will be marked by an exhibition titled Plato in LA: Contemporary Artists’ Visions which will feature work by celebrated contemporary artists, such as Joseph Kosuth, Jeff Koons, Michelangelo Pistoletto and Huang Yong Ping. These artists have created some extremely thought-provoking, philosophical works that force viewers to reconsider their perception of the world and strive to expand their understanding of their surroundings. The work featured are multi-disciplinary and seek to respond to Platonic concepts and foster contemplation, a fundamental Platonic experience.
