Taka Ishii Gallery
Taka Ishii Gallery is already established as one of Tokyo's
foremost contemporary art galleries, representing high-profile names from Japan
and overseas. Their booth at this year's Art Fair Tokyo presented three artists
attempting to show that range: Taro Shinoda, Dutch artist Marijke van
Warmerdam, and the renowned photographer Daido Moriyama. The disarmingly simple
yet powerful Another Day (2011), by
Warmerdam, showed a vision of a blazing sunset in a spectrum of tones, repeated
on ten silkscreen panels each with the text 'another day.' Their poster quality
mimicking advertisements only served to emphasize the monotony of daily life.
Shinoda's work was a surprising departure from his usual larger-than-life
installations, instead a delicate watercolour and perhaps a preparatory sketch
for his environmental works. The almost child-like sincerity of his lines
belied a fragile poignancy, like that of a haiku. Moriyama's bold black and
white photograph was taken from his Hawaii
series, a close-up of some plant-life. One could not help seeing these works
together, as a resonant comment on nature and the continuity of the natural
world.
